This 2011 Doctor Who story places the Eleventh Doctor, Amy Pond and Rory Williams on the planet of Xirrenda. They just happen to arrive when Xirrenda is facing its greatest threat for countless generations. A threat that if left unchallenged could wipe out every living creature on the planet.
The Doctor and his married companions had been on the TARDIS when he had set its controls to take them to a party. Instead of landinding somewhere that is hosting or holding a party that they can gate crash, they ended upon a world in serious danger. For there is a deadly swarm of tiny yet vicious creatures that kill every living thing unfortunate enough to be in their way has just reached Xirrenda. What makes these creatures almost impossible to destroy is the fact that they split into two every time they eat eat something. They also create as a waste product a metal that is very strong but also very light, meaning that it would highly valuable who survives the swarm to collect and then sell to the highest bidders.
Not only are all the people on Xirrenda in danger so are the numerous tourists and school parties, which go on safaris to see the planet's exotic wildlife. The Doctor understands the danger that Xirrenda is facing, and also realises that escape is made very difficult as the swarming creatures travel so quickly and in so many numbers that they generate gravitational forcefields that stop computers and space ships working properly - powerful enough to alter the TARDIS' course too. An old hardly used train and railway system holds the key for the Doctor evacuating everybody to safety.
The quest for safety is aided when the Doctor learns that the local tribe known as the Ulla could know how to defeat the swarm, the solution been described in the legends and songs that havew been passed down from one generation to the next one. It also seems that the Ulla had created the creatures in the first place, many thousands of years before. It seems the Ulla had built a machine that can switch the creatures off.
Everybody has to get to the secret caves of the Ulla to save Xirrenda as well as themselves. But not everybody wants the swarm stopped.
Over all this is a well told adventure, with a tense finale.
