Book Review The Affair By Lee Child

This novel tells the story behind Reacher departure from the Military Police.

Fans of the Jack Reacher series may have wondered how their hero had reached the decision to leave the U S Army to go freelance.  Author Lee Child uses The Affair to provide the details and the reasons for Reacher's exit from the military.

An unofficial investigation

For this case Reacher was sent  undercover to investigate the murder of a young woman near an army base. An official investigating officer has already been sent yet Jack concludes that is been told to remove evidence if it indicates that a soldier killed the victim. He is supposed to find out what the local Police know

or do not know.

Three murders for the price of one

The local sheriff Elizabeth Devereaux instantly works out that Reacher is a military cop, as she used to be one herself for the U

S Marines. It will come as no surprise to fans of the series that the two of them become lovers. However Reacher then starts to hear and read things about her that make him wonder if she is either part of the cover up or even the killer herself.

To cover up or not to cover up? That is the question

By the closing chapters Reacher knows that he has to choose between covering up and possibly keeping his job, or reveal the truth and face the consequences.

Classic thriller from a modern master of suspense, a must read.
